Asa Demands ₦300 million From Joeboy Over Copyright Infringement Claims With His Latest Single ‘Contour’

Two months after music producer Tempoe took down the most streamed song off Asa’s latest album ‘V’ over copyright issues, Asa demands ₦300 million from Joeboy for infringement, following Tempoe producing his latest single ‘Contour’.

Asa and Joeboy

On July 25, 2022, news of Asa getting sued by Nigerian music producer Tempoe hit the internet, with the latter getting a legal injunction for him to take down two songs off her latest album, ‘V’.

‘IDG’ ft Wizkid, which was the most streamed song off the album at the time, and ‘Love Me Or Give Me Red Wine’ were then removed from all streaming platforms with no sign of settlement anytime soon.

Another song is about to bite the dust. Joeboy’s Contour, a single he released on August 19, 2022, is cut in the crossfire as Asa on October 2, served the rising artiste a notice that claims that the beat of the song was a composition Asa had worked on during a recording session with Tempoe on September 22, 2020.

But according to renowned music journalist Joey Akan, Tempoe had worked on the beat for Asa, but she reportedly did not use it nor pay for it. Joeboy did.

“Asa is suing Joeboy for a beat Tempoe worked on for her but she reportedly didn’t use or pay for it, but Joeboy did. Tempoe got his injunction and brought down her music. Let’s see if she gets hers too,” he said in a tweet.

Asa’s legal notice to Joeboy

If given an injunction, Joeboy stands to lose ₦300 million as settlement and give Asa a 60% publishing split on the song. She also demanded a written apology which Joeboy refused to give.

In a post on his Instagram story, the music star called her bluff with multiple posts stating that he is not backing down. He said, “You said I have 24 hours, it’s been 48 hours, do something.”

What an injunction does is legally stop the distribution of a piece of music that may be considered likely to infringe on a creative right. In 2018, Juice Wrld lost 85% of the royalties for “Lucid Dreams”, his hit single, to Stink, because it interpolates Stink’s 1993 single “Shape Of My Heart”.

Tiwa Savage, in 2019, was also sued for ₦200 million by Nigerian singer Danny Young for copying from his 2009 single, “Oju Tiwon”, for her 2018 song, ‘One’. They, however, settled out of court.
