Baby S.O.N Opens Up On Rejecting Riky Rick’s Offer To Hop On Star-studded Hit “Sondela.” As a result of his enormous contributions to the culture, Riky Rick will always be regarded as the champion of South African hip-hop. The late rapper was always able to keep himself at the forefront of composing blockbuster songs for the rap genre since he was able to take part in so many chart-topping tracks.
One of the last tracks that Boss Zonke featured on was Shishiliza and Venom’s Sondela which also consists of various artists. Baby S.O.N was one of the artists and songwriters who were present when the song was being created.
During an interview with SA Hip-Hop Mag via the Episode Podcast, the famed song composer revealed that he turned down Riky Rick’s offer to feature on Sondela. Baby S.O.N said that Zadok took him to meet Riky during the making of Sondela and the recording studio was packed with stars.
“Zadok took me to meet Riky Rick and when we got there they were working on Sondela. So there was Costa Titch, there was Blxckie, Blxckie’s photographer at that time, Tshego, it was a packed room,” he said. Whilst working on Sondela, S.O.N flexed his pen game and offered Riky to try lyrics behind the mic, but the late rapper offered the former to get in the booth himself.
Since he was nervous, Baby S.O.N rejected the request and gave his lyrics to Blxckie rather. “I wrote something and I was like yo, here’s something if you feel like you know, then he (Riky Rick) said no, do it yourself. I said no, I gave it to Blxckie, I was like Blxckie here’s something then Blxckie recorded it.” He said.
Considering the vibes of Sondela, it came out at a perfect time, in the month of love and it worked perfectly as a Valentine’s Day song. The song went on to do amazing things, becoming the country’s most-played tune on music charts.
